After leaving Guapi Assu Bird Lodge located on the REGUA (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu) grounds the morning of October 24, 2011, we headed out to look for the Golden Lion Tamarins in a privately owned forest. This endemic primate was very charismatic proving why it is considered to be an icon of the Brazilian Atlantic Forest. Instead of having to climb up into the "hills" to locate this species, we were very fortunate to find a troop of eleven monkeys gathered in a lowland area. The Golden Lion Tamarin and all new world monkeys have claw-like nails (tegulae) instead of flat nails (ungulate) as found in all other primates and humans. (See photo.) Their claw-like nails allow Tamarins to cling to the sides of tree trunks. Temperatures were in the 70's on this clear day with blue skies.
