We photographed this Festive Coquette, Lophornis chalybeus, during a visit to Jonas d’Abronzo's house located on the Folha Seca Road on October 16, 2011. Jonas has hummingbird and platform feeders on and near his covered back porch where there were chairs to sit on and watch the show of birds coming in to feed. Hummingbird coloration depends on the way light strikes the bird's feathers. This female Festive Coquette has a white malar area above a grayish throat. A dark spot can be seen on the throat and mid-chest areas. There is a narrow white band across the rump, and the lower flanks are buffy. Temperatures were in the 70's on this cloudy afternoon with intermittent heavy rain.
