Brad photographed this Magpie Tanager (Cissopis leveriana) from the pool area at our hotel, the Hotel do Ype, early in the morning on October 20, 2011. This large, jay-like tanager has a black head, nape, breast, wings, and tail. The rest of the bird is white as are the wing coverts. The adult has a yellow iris. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy day. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
