Brad photographed this Magpie Tanager (Cissopis leveriana) from the pool area at our hotel, the Hotel do Ype, in Itatiaia National Park early in the morning on October 20, 2011. This large, jay-like tanager has a black head, nape, breast, wings, and tail. The rest of the bird is white as are the wing coverts. The adult has a yellow iris. Scope views were all we got of this bird who was perched down-valley from our vantage point. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy day. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
