We birded several trails on the Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu (REGUA) grounds during the morning of October 22, 2011. Our main goal was to see the Shrike-like Cotinga (successful). Along our upwards hike, we saw this Pin-tailed Manakin, Ilicura militaris, a Brazilian endemic. The male, shown here, has an orange-colored iris, a red forehead and lower back with whitish underparts. The rest of the bird's upperparts are black with some olive on the wings (not visible here). The elongated central tail feathers give the tail a pointed look. Temperatures were in the upper 60's on this partly cloudy morning.
