We were birding the Agulhas Negras Road in Itatiaia National Park on October 19, 2011, when Brad photographed this Purple-breasted Plovercrest, Stephanoxis lalandi lalandi, perched in a nearby tree. The male shown here has pale gray underparts and a purple breast. Upperparts and the crest are emerald green. Temperatures were in the 50's on this partly cloudy morning. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
