We were birding the Agulhas Negras Road in Itatiaia National Park on October 19, 2011, when Brad photographed this Purple-breasted Plovercrest, Stephanoxis lalandi lalandi. The female shown here has pale gray underparts, emerald green upperparts, and a white-tipped tail. Temperatures were in the 50's on this partly cloudy morning. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
