We left our hotel, the Hotel do Bosque in Pereque, Rio de Janeiro state, on the morning of October 18, 2011, to bird the lowlands near Pereque. Brad photographed this colorful Red-necked Tanager, Tangara cyanocephala, perched in a nearby tree eating a juicy grub. This bird has a cobalt-blue colored crown and throat. The forehead and chin are black. There is a turquoise line around the eyes and above the forehead. Underparts are green, and the wings are black with broad green edging. An orangish dotted line can be seen on the wing coverts. There is a red scarf like area around the neck, and nape is black. All in all, this is quite a colorful little bird. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy humid day.
