On October 15, 2011, we headed to Ubatuba. On our way there, we stopped at a marshy area between Mogi das Cruzes and the smaller town of Biritiba-Mirim to look for the São Paulo Antwren (Formicivora novum), a Brazilian endemic. This species was only recently discovered and described (2005) and consists of a very small number of individuals. Brad took this photograph of a male showing black underparts. Upperparts are brown with white spotting on the wings. White wing patches at the shoulder are flared when the bird is defending its territory. Temperatures were in the mid- to upper 60's on this cloudy afternoon with intermittent rain.
