After lunch on October 24, 2011, we headed to Rio de Janeiro with a stop at an area with windswept restinga scrub to find the endemic Restinga Antwren. A restinga is a distinct type of coastal tropical/subtropical moist broadleaf forest that is found in Brazil (contains plant communities that range from creeping plants to open scrubs and even forests of medium sized trees formed on sandy, acidic, and nutrient-poor soils). We saw both the male (shown here) and the female Serra (Restinga) Antwren, Formicivora serrana littoralis. The male is predominately black with white baring on the wings. Temperatures on this sunny afternoon were in the 80's.
