We arrived at the lower portion of the Agulhas Negras Road, which runs through the highest elevations in Itatiaia National Park, at about 7:30 AM on October 19, 2011, for a full day of birding. The Serra do Mar Tyrannulet, Phylloscartes difficilis, was one of the first species that we saw. This Brazilian endemic has greenish-olive colored upperparts and whitish-gray underparts. The eye-ring and lores are white. Temperatures were in the 40's on this partly cloudy morning. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
