Brad photographed this Southern Rough-winged Swallow (Stelgidopteryx ruficollis) from the pool area at our hotel, the Hotel do Ype, in Itatiaia National Park early in the morning on October 20, 2011. Any swallow that is perched is a great swallow because one can look at it and study its features. This bird was perched on the roof of the lounge area near the pool where it was nesting. Upperparts are a uniform brownish color. Underparts are grayish, and the throat is a tawny color. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy day. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
