The Spot-backed Antshrike was one of the 'big five' (Large-tailed, Tufted, Giant, and White-bearded) Antshrikes that we saw at Intervales. We photographed this male Spot-backed Antshrike (Hypoedaleus guttatus) on October 13, 2011, while walking along the road below Pousada Pica Pau at Intervales State Park. This side view shows the males's grayish breast, and ochraceous belly and undertail coverts. Black upperparts have bold white spots and bands. Temperatures on this cloudy morning with intermittent rain were in the 60's. Intervales State Park is located on a 3,300 foot high escarpment in the State of São Paulo in the Paranapiacaba mountain range/upper Ribeira Valley, southwest of the city of São Paulo and north of Curitiba.
