We photographed this Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Eupetomena macroura, during a visit to Jonas d’Abronzo's house located on the Folha Seca Road near Ubatuba on October 16, 2011. Jonas has hummingbird and platform feeders on and near his covered back porch where there were chairs to sit on and watch the show of birds coming in to feed. The violet blue head (here looking blackish in the facial area), nape, throat, and swallow-like tail are distinguishing characteristics of this species. Wings are a deep gray-black color, and the remaining upper and underparts are greenish-blue in this individual. (Note: this bird is covered with small drops of rain...not mites.) Temperatures were in the 70's on this cloudy evening with intermittent heavy rain.
