We were birding the Agulhas Negras Road in Itatiaia National Park on October 19, 2011, when Brad photographed this Thick-billed Saltator, Saltator maxillosus. The short heavy black bill has an orange-colored base and upper mandible. Upperparts are dark gray. The supercilium is white. Underparts are buffy-gray. The throat and vent are buff-colored. Temperatures were in the 50's on this partly cloudy morning. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
