We drove from REGUA (Reserva Ecológica de Guapiaçu) to Nova Friburgo and on to Sumidouro during the latter part of the morning of October 23, 2011. We spent from 12:15-2:30 PM birding this area. The Three-toed Jacamar, Jacamaralcyon tridactyla, was our target bird. This species is endemic to a small region of the Atlantic forests of southeastern Brazil. It has a long dark bill, a brownish head that is thickly mottled with thin pale streaks, and dull green upperparts. The breast and belly are white. Temperatures were in the low 70's on this partly cloudy afternoon.
