We birded the Agulhas Negras Road in Itatiaia National Park on October 19, 2011. Brad photographed this Velvety Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus nigerrimus), a Brazilian endemic, just after we finished our picnic lunch. This glossy blue-black colored bird was perched atop a shrub with its wings raised showing a white band on the primaries. The bill is a pale bluish-gray. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy afternoon (in the sun it felt like 70 degrees) at a maximum elevation of 2150 meters. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
