We birded the Agulhas Negras Road in Itatiaia National Park on October 19, 2011. Brad photographed this Velvety Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus nigerrimus), a Brazilian endemic, just after we finished our picnic lunch. Low lying clouds or fog that seemed to come out of nowhere obscured the glossy blue-black color of this bird. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy afternoon at a maximum elevation of 2150 meters. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
