We birded the Agulhas Negras Road in Itatiaia National Park on October 19, 2011, where Brad photographed this Velvety Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus nigerrimus), a Brazilian endemic. We had just finished our picnic lunch when we saw this glossy blue-black colored bird perched atop a shrub. The bill is a pale bluish-gray, and the iris is red. Temperatures were in the 60's on this partly cloudy afternoon at a maximum elevation of 2150 meters. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
