We spent the early part of the morning of October 20, 2011, birding around our hotel, the Hotel do Ype, in Itatiaia National Park. Later that morning, we birded around the Hotel Simon where Brad photographed this Velvety Black-Tyrant (Knipolegus nigerrimus). This Brazilian endemic is a glossy blue-black color and has a red iris. The bird's crest can be seen in this profile. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy day. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
