Brad photographed this Whistling Heron (Syrigma sibilatrix) while we were hiking along Estrada do Angelim during a visit to the rainforest at Fazenda Angelim on October 16, 2011. This area is located in a valley near the Serra do Mar mountain range. The red bill with its lack tip, the bare blue skin around the eyes, the blue-gray colored back, and golden finely streaked wing coverts are the distinctive features of this species. Temperatures were in the 60's on this cloudy morning with intermittent rain.
