We spent the early part of the morning of October 20, 2011, birding around our hotel, the Hotel do Ype, in Itatiaia National Park. Later that morning and into the early afternoon, we birded around the Hotel Simon and along the Tres Picos Trail where Brad photographed this White-shouldered Fire-Eye (Pyriglena leucoptera). The male is a glossy black color and has a red iris. The white interscapular patch and wing-bar are not visible. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy day. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
