We spent the early part of the morning of October 20, 2011, birding around our hotel, the Hotel do Ype, in Itatiaia National Park. Later that morning and into the early afternoon, we birded around the Hotel Simon and along the Tres Picos Trail where Brad photographed this White-spotted Woodpecker (Veniliornis spilogaster). Upperparts are barred black and white with an overall dark wash of olive-yellowish-green. The male has a red crown and a pronounced white supercilium and malar stripe. White spots on the bird's back and wing edges can be seen in this photo. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy day. Itatiaia National Park is situated on the shoulders of the Serra Mantiqueria, a range of mountains that straddles the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.
