We left our hotel, the Hotel do Bosque in Pereque, Rio de Janeiro state, on the morning of October 18, 2011, to bird the lowlands near Pereque. Brad photographed this Yellow-eared Woodpecker, Veniliornis maculifrons, a species that is endemic to the humid Atlantic forest in eastern Brazil. Underparts are white heavily streaked in brown. Upperparts are similar but covered with yellowish-colored feathers. The male's crown is red, and a yellowish nuchal collar is present. Temperatures were in the 70's on this partly cloudy humid day.
