Brad and I were birding along the Poço Preto (Black Well) Road in Iguaçu Falls National Park when we saw this Buff-bellied Puffbird perched atop a branch eating a katydid. The Buff-bellied Puffbird has often been regarded as a sub-species of the White-necked Puffbird (Notharchus macrorhynchus). It differs most noticeably from the White-necked Puffbird in being smaller, having a rufous belly and grey, rather than black patches, on its flanks. (Refer to Kevin Zimmer's PROPOSAL (#124) to the SOUTH AMERICAN CHECK-LIST COMMITTEE for elevation to species level.) Temperatures on this humid morning were already in the upper 80's.
