The Iguaçu Falls area is well-known for its diversity of butterflies. This photo was taken at one of the overlooks at the falls (on our bird hike to Devil's Throat) and shows a Candrena Eighty-eight or Number Eighty (Diaethria candrena). The forewings of this butterfly are black with a deep blue basal flush, and the hindwings are mostly black, with a deep blue basal flush. The underside of the forewing is mostly red with a broad black border, while the underside of the hindwing is mostly white with a thin black outer margin and two thin black concentric bands bordering a distinct 80 shape on the center of the wing. Temperatures were on their way up towards the 90's on this sunny, clear morning.
