We photographed this Tegu Lizard in the back courtyard of Hotel das Cataratas in Iguaçu Falls during the afternoon of September 29, 2011. The Black and White Tegu Lizard (Tupinambis teguixin) is native to Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay. Supposedly, a Tegu will eat its tail during hibernation for sustenance. The tail grows back with a reddish color. Note the stub of a tail on this Tegu. The weather was hot with temperatures in the upper 90's.
