Brad and I arrived at Hotel das Cataratas in Iguaçu Falls, Brazil, during the early afternoon of September 28, 2011. Between 1600 and 1830, we took a bird hike along the road leading to the Devil's Throat. As the evening progressed, temperatures cooled from highs in the 90's to lows in the 70's. A colony of Red-rumped Caciques was busy foraging and protecting their nests in trees located outside the main entrance to our hotel. Red-rumped Caciques are large, blue-black birds with blue eyes, red rumps and stout, tapered, pale-colored bills. Their metallic squawking calls and almost constant activity make them fun to watch.
