Early in the morning on September 30, 2011, we went owling along the Poço Preto (Black Well) Road in Iguaçu Falls National Park. After owling, we boarded an open park vehicle which took us further along this off-road 5.4 mile trail. Whenever we saw a bird of interest, we got off the vehicle for better looks. We ended up doing a lot of walking because of the number of interesting birds that we saw. This is a photo of a Scaly-headed Parrot (Pionus maximiliani) showing its blue chest and bright red undertail coverts. This parrot is also called Scaly-headed Pionus, Maximilian Pionus, Maximilian Parrot, Maximilian's Pionus or Maximilian's Parrot. Temperatures on this humid morning were already in the upper 70's.
