Early in the morning on September 30, 2011, we went owling along the Poço Preto (Black Well) Road in Iguaçu Falls National Park. After owling, we boarded an open park vehicle which took us further along this off-road 5.4 mile trail. Whenever we saw a bird of interest, we got off the vehicle for better looks. We ended up doing a lot of walking because of the number of interesting birds that we saw. This is a photo of a male Surucua Trogon with its orange eye-ring, black to dark blue head, neck and breast, pinkish-red belly and all white undertail. Trogon surrucura has two subspecies; the southern nominate subspecies shown here and the northern aurantius that has an orange-yellow belly. Temperatures on this humid morning were already in the upper 70's.
