On our first afternoon in Iguaçu Falls National Park (September 28, 2011), Brad and I birded along the road leading from our hotel to the Devil's Throat area of Iguaçu Falls (Brazilian side). Swallow Tanagers were perched in the trees along the forest edge. This photo shows a male Swallow Tanager with its black mask, blue upper body coloration, white under-belly, and lateral barring. This species is mainly frugivorous and is a cavity nester (typically a burrow in a dirt bank). It was a sunny day with temperatures ranging from highs in the 90's to lows in the 70's.
