The Cuban Black-Hawk is a species endemic to Cuba, and its typical habitat is mangroves and coastal swamps. We were birding along a 21 Km stretch of wetland bordered road in Las Salinas which is located in Zapata National Park in southern Cuba during the afternoon of April 15, 2012, when we saw this Cuban Black-Hawk perched in a tree on the side of the road. The Cuban Black-Hawk, Buteogallus gundlachii, is a dark, chocolate-brown color and has broad, rounded wings with a white patch located at the base of the primaries that is visible in flight. Its short tail has broad black and white bands. The bill is orangish with a black tip, and the legs are yellowish to orange in color. Temperatures were in the upper 80's on this humid, sunny afternoon.
