During the morning of April 12, 2012, we visited and birded the Cueva de los Portales in Parque Nacional La Güira (La Güira National Park) where Che Guevara had his headquarters during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. The Cuban Blackbird, Dives atroviolaceus, is endemic to Cuba. The upperparts on this all-black bird have a violaceous metallic sheen. Other distinguishing characteristics include a thick black bill with a slightly curved upper mandible, dark eyes and a flat tail. The female is slightly smaller in size than the male. Temperatures were in the mid-80's on this humid, sunny morning.
