During the late afternoon and early evening of April 11, 2012, we birded in Parque Nacional La Güira (La Güira National Park) which is located in the Pinar del Rio Province of Cuba. The national park was formerly the estate of wealthy landowner and politician, José Manuel Cortina, who traded in precious woods. The estate was confiscated by the government in 1959, and Cortina was forced into exile. We hiked and birded in the area of his mansion and formal gardens which, unfortunately, are now in ruins. The endemic Cuban Green Woodpecker, Xiphidiopicus percussus, shown in this photograph has a bright olive green back with dark streaks on its yellow underparts. The head is mostly white with a thick black postocular stripe. The male has a red crown that extends from the forehead to nape. An alternating white and black pattern can be seen on the folded wing and along the tail feathers. Temperatures were in the 80's on this humid, sunny afternoon.
