We birded the Sopillar region of Zapata, a vast wetland and forest area around the Bay of Pigs, late in the afternoon on April 14, 2012. The endemic Cuban Trogon (Priotelus temnurus) has iridescent dark green upperparts with violet-blue crown and nape, white throat and breast, and a vermilion-colored belly. The iris and lower mandible are red. The tail shape, unique among trogons, is flared. It was hot and humid with temperatures in the upper 80's during this late afternoon hike.
