We drove to the Zapata Peninsula late in the afternoon on April 13, 2012. Near the town of Playa Larga and the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de Cochinos) on the southern coast of Cuba, we encountered "thousands" of land crabs (Gecarcinus ruricola) on the roadway. In spring these land crabs emerge from moist forested areas to breed in the nearby sea. This species has four color morphs: red, black, yellow and green.
