We drove to the Zapata Peninsula late in the afternoon on April 13, 2012. Near the town of Playa Larga and the Bay of Pigs (Bahia de Cochinos) on the southern coast of Cuba, we encountered "thousands" of land crabs (Gecarcinus ruricola) on the roadway. In spring these reddish land crabs emerge from moist forested areas in this region to breed in the nearby sea. This crab was one of the lucky ones that made it across the road.
