During the late afternoon and early evening of April 11, 2012, we birded in Parque Nacional La Güira (La Güira National Park) which is located in the Pinar del Rio Province of Cuba. The national park was formerly the estate of wealthy landowner and politician, José Manuel Cortina, who traded in precious woods. The estate was confiscated by the government in 1959, and Cortina was forced into exile. We hiked and birded in the area of his mansion and formal gardens. The endemic Fernandina's Flicker (Colaptes fernandinae), shown in this photograph is yellowish-brown in color with black barring. The cinnamon-colored head has thin black streaks on the crown. Temperatures were in the 80's on this humid, sunny afternoon.
