After breakfast on the morning of April 13, 2012, we had a Conservation Exchange in Aula Ecologica of the Quinta de los Molinos (an estate located in the heart of Havana) with the Foundation for Patrimony, Community and Environment. The Cannonball Tree (Couroupita guianensis) was one of the trees growing in the garden area. This photo shows the tree's orange, scarlet and pink-colored flowers growing from tangled extrusions that grow on the trunk just below the foliage branches. Large spherical, brown, woody fruits (cannonballs) are also visible. The name is derived from the fact that when mature fruit hits the ground it makes a sound like a small explosion.
