During the early evening of April 12, 2012, we drove from Las Terrazas located in the Pinar del Rio Province of Cuba 74 Km northeast to Havana. Our hotel, the Hotel Ambos Mundos, was located in Old Havana (La Habana Vieja). Since the area is closed to traffic, we walked to the hotel. On our way there we photographed this sculpture of "Christ of Havana (Cristo de La Habana)" located on a hilltop in the Havana suburb of Casablanca across the bay from where we were standing. Carved out of Carrara marble, it is the work of Cuban sculptor Jilma Madera. The sculpture was inaugurated on La Cabaņa hill on December 24, 1958. Fifteen days after its inauguration, on January 8, 1959, Fidel Castro entered Havana during the Cuban revolution. That same day, the sculpture was hit by lightning, and the head was destroyed. It was subsequently repaired.
