This photo of Joanne was taken early in the evening on April 11, 2012, while we were birding La Güira National Park near San Diego de los Baños located in the Pinar del Rio Province of Cuba. This area was the estate of wealthy landowner and politician, José Manuel Cortina, who traded in precious woods. Cortina was forced into exile in 1959, and his properties (including Cuevas de los Portales) were confiscated by Fidel Castro. The area was declared a Cuban National Monument in 1987. The mansion and formal gardens are now in ruins. The lovely marble statue shown here sits atop a hill at the end of a long walkway.
