We were stopped at Coal Bank Pass (elevation 10,640 ft.) when we photographed this Pine Siskin busily feeding on a thistle plant. This mountain pass is located in the San Juan National Forest in the San Juan Mountains of western Colorado. We were driving on the Million Dollar Highway, U.S. Highway 550 south of Silverton, which is part of the San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway, and heading from Silverton to Durango, Colorado. It was a sunny afternoon with temperatures in the low 70's.
