This photograph of an American Oystercatcher, endemic subspecies galapagensis, was taken on the west side of Espanola (Hood) Island during a hike at Punto Suarez. There are about 200 breeding pairs in the current population. This species is typically found on rocky shores, sandy beaches, and coastal lagoons. Temperatures were in the upper 70's during this late afternoon hike with partly cloudy skies.
