After landing on Bartolome Island, we hiked and climbed a wooden staircase containing 372 steps to its summit at 359 feet. The National Park constructed this staircase to help control erosion in the friable volcanic tuff that makes up the incline. We had excellent views of the sheltered waters of Sullivan Bay and Pinnacle Rock. As we headed back down from the summit, we spotted several Pacific Green Turtles on the sand below ("stranded" on the beach after a night of egg laying). Temperatures were in the low 70's with partly cloudy skies on this pre-breakfast hike on Monday, December 1, 2008.
