On the morning of Thursday, December 4, 2008, we visited the western coast of Isabela Island. The Dark-billed Cuckoo is a resident species and is fairly common on Isabela. It was another partly cloudy morning with temperatures in the mid-70's (early morning hikes were the rule in order to avoid the intense heat). Isabela Island is of great geological interest. In 1954, one and one half square kilometers of the marine reef off the coast of Bahía Urbina was uplifted almost instantaneously by as much as twelve feet. Marine creatures were left high and dry. Some evidence of this occurrence can still be found today.
