During the afternoon of December 6, 2008, we hiked along the "boulder trail" at Punta Suarez on the island of Espanola. The variety of wildlife on this island was something not to be missed. This is a photograph of a female Espanola Lava Lizard. Lava lizards are readily identified by their relatively small size and long, tapering tails, slim bodies and rather pointed heads. The largest of the lava lizards is the Espanola. Six of the seven species of lava lizards are confined to single islands as reflected by their common names. All are endemic. It was a beautiful, sunny afternoon with temperatures in the 80's.
