We saw this Flightless Cormorant while hiking the established national park trail (one must stay on the trail and have a naturalist guide present at all times) at Punta Espinosa on Fernandina Island. Fernandina is an imposing volcano rising to nearly 5,000 feet in elevation. This island has a history of erupting every few years and is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The rich seas bathe the stark lava coastline and create a rich environment for birds and sea life. Late in the afternoon it was cloudy and breezy with temperatures in the upper 60's. The Flightless or Galapagos Cormorant is an endemic species. It is estimated that there are between 700-800 pairs in about 100 small colonies. Note the atrophied wings.
