This photograph was taken on the island of Floreana early in the morning on December 5, 2008. We were visiting the Post Office Barrel when we saw this female lizard sitting on a rock. Lava lizards are readily identified by their relatively small size and long, tapering tails, slim bodies and rather pointed heads. The smallest of the lava lizards is the Floreana. Six of the seven species of lava lizards are confined to single islands as reflected by their common names. All are endemic. It was a beautiful, sunny morning with temperatures in the 70's.
