We were hiking in the giant tortoise preserve within the Galápagos National Park on the island of Santa Cruz after lunch when we saw this Galápagos Tortoise. The giant tortoise is locally common and is found mainly in the highlands. There are fourteen subspecies that have been described, although only eleven of these survive. The subspecies, porteri, resides on Santa Cruz. While we were up in the highlands, temperatures were in the 70's, and skies were cloudy. We did experience occassional light rain (garua).
