Late in the afternoon on December 4, 2008, we hiked along the "lava" trail on the southwest part of Isabella Island known as Punta Moreno. Our hike over ancient lava flows allowed us to experience the dramatic volcanic geology of the island and to visit several improbable brackish ponds isolated in the volcanic rock. It was at one of these ponds that we saw our first Greater Flamingo. Temperatures were in the low 70's with cloudy skies.
